Best aspect
The weekly shows, the costumes and performance opportunities, the dancers are very busy and it feels like a company experience, it is organized and supportive, from drop off to the last day they are well organized
Full performances every Saturday. Schedule for each day posted at around 1000. Dancers classes were technique and another style and then sometimes lunch or pointe class then lunch. Rehearsal schedules dictated what the rest of your day would look like regarding how much dancing.
The best aspects were the quality of the teachers/instruction and my picky eater loved the food.
It is a great first time summer intensive. My daughter had a wonderful, positive experience.
Least liked about program
no air conditioning in dorms and some dance spaces
There wasn’t pointe class every day and they don’t tell you in the handbook or packing list that they don’t allow crop tops, so most people didn’t have much to wear.
Far from home but worth it.
My daughter felt like she could have been challenged more and I felt a little disappointed with the choreography for the performance.
Suggested changes to program
air conditioning
I would add pointe class every day and more fans in the studios.
Levels for the intermediate program
Culture of program
friendly, warm, supportive, fun
Everyone is very kind and supportive, RA’s were amazing.
For my intermediate dancer it was very welcoming and encouraging. Excellent first time away from home intensive. Felt very safe and she learned a lot.
Easy, fun, good first time away intensive
Other comments
The main program here is an excellent opportunity for those new to sleep away summer intensives who want to perform and I have heard the intermediate program is VERY supportive
A new show is put on every week , so you get to learn lots of new roles and have a company experience. For parents who can’t make it to the show in person, they are live-streamed on Facebook. There isn’t a huge focus on technique and it’s more about learning to adapt and have a company performing experience. There are new guest teachers every week and live pianists. Also ice is available and the meals provided have a large selection and are mostly very good. Great community with lots of super nice dancers. Small campus and the handbook says there isn’t cell service but most people had great coverage. Dorms older and without AC. Six dancers per suite with one RA in each suite. Shared bathrooms per suite. Super fun and supportive environment with great people! I would do it again but not as a main intensive for the summer because I need to focus more on technique in the summer. But 3-4 weeks intense technique followed by 2-3 weeks at Burklyn would be perfect!
My dancer loved this program and would love to go back next summer.
