Housing comment

  • The dancers are housed in bellinger hall which is adequate. The food is not amazing but my dancer always found something to eat. There is no air conditioning but with a fan, my dancer was fine. Bellinger hall could use some renovations but its more than fine for 1-week, even for the longer program as well. The rest of the campus of Chautauqua institution is gorgeous.
  • The RAs are not specific to this program and do not do anything organized or structured with the dancers. While there are cool activities available to students who seek them out at the Institute, there are no organized activities outside of dance classes or organizing around attending the events, it is all dancer-driven.

Best aspect

  • 1 week was enough to show off CHQ for main program. Sasha Janes and Patricia Mc Bride taught this also. impressive
  • My daughter felt that the teachers were helpful and kind. She enjoyed the atmosphere of being on the Chautauqua grounds and living with the other dancers in the program.
  • It is a perfect short introduction to summer intensives in a beautiful environment. Wonderful and caring faculty.
  • the faculty are great and the Institute is a beautiful, special place

Least liked about program

  • No air conditioning
  • The communication in advance of the program is not very strong. The second time my dancer attended Chautauqua, I didn't mind as I knew what I should be expecting but the first time I thought I had missed e-mails.
  • We dropped off on a Friday morning and they had literally nothing organized or planned until Monday classes except one 90 minute class on Saturday and a meeting Friday night. There is nothing organized to help kids meet or explore the grounds or bond. While we thought they would dance 9 days over Friday-Saturday in fact we had to pack up early Saturday so it was really 5 days of dance. We did not get any information on this, or schedules, in advance. While the freedom to explore is wonderful, this was way too much freedom for this age with zero guidance.

Suggested changes to program

  • Food and AC in dorms
  • Air conditioning
  • Better communication in advance
  • Not having 2.5 days with nothing to do-way more dance, ways for the kid to get to know each other and the grounds on dropoff day, keeping them busy/more support for many who saw this as a good first sleepaway intensive but in fact it was fully independent so really not great for kids who are nervous for a first sleepaway experience

Culture of program

  • very laid back. CHQ is a hippie little place, very fun.
  • Supportive
  • Chautauqua is truly unique, it is hard to describe. I would not say it is very competitive. The teachers are very caring and kind.
  • disorganized, lacking communication

Other comments

  • Some of my answers to the questions are wrong as there is no year-round Chautauqua so there are not year-round faculty. Also, there are on different levels within the workshop. All the dancers in workshop are together. The boys usually do have some separate classes.
