Best aspect

  • Was a nice length and good introduction to intensives, beautiful setting, strong faculty
  • This program is designed to give younger students a glimpsed into what summer intensives are all about. My daughter loved everything about it from the pointe classes to the horton. She loved all of the teachers but especially loved Sasha Jane. It is a very nurturing environment in a beautiful setting. We got to see the pre pro division perform and it was some of the best dance I've ever seen. They were an inspiration for the younger dancers.
  • Great program for a younger dancer who is not yet ready to go away alone. Excellent instructors as well.
  • The Chautauqua Institution and grounds are fabulous. Idyllic setting on the lake. Very safe and full of artistic and educational opportunities. The joint performance of the Orchestra and Dance schools was outstanding. The festival and pre-professional dance students plus orchestra students are all so talented and put on a great show. Sasha James’s choreography was incredible and it was a treat to see them perform Rubies under Patricia McBride’s direction. It was a treat for the dancers in the mini program to enjoy the show and imagine themselves on that stage one day. The students in the mini program put on a lovely in-studio demonstration for their parents the next day.

Least liked about program

  • Communication was lacking leading up to it about this particular program and housing on site/gate passes, housing/food are expensive there, no levels in classes
  • That is was only 4 days.
  • Uncertainty about navigating the grounds of the institution regarding passes, parking, etc
  • A lot the dancers knew each other before and formed cliques right away. It was hard or near impossible for some to make friends.

Suggested changes to program

  • Housing provided for dancers, longer days with more classes
  • Maybe make it longer for those students who aren't ready to sleep away yet. I also would have liked to see more levels but in such a short program that doesn't seem to make sense.
  • A little longer.
  • It’s too short. A lot of the dancers would benefit from a five or six day session. For some it was there first time dancing the Balanchine technique. Would be nice to have more time to explore it.

Culture of program

  • Friendly, idyllic setting
  • Nurturing, kind, inspiring top rate
  • High quality
  • The staff and Chautauqua Institution community (guests and residents) were supportive, welcoming and kind to the students and visitors.

Other comments

  • For the younger students they will get a really “small” taste of what the program offers. It really shines for the older students in the Festival and Pre-Programs.
