Housing comment

  • Program held at Smith College: stunning 1900’s dorms… lots of stairs
  • The dancers stay in their own residence house on the campus of Smith College. Badge access is required to get into the house so it's very secure.

General Comments

Overall recommendation

Absolutely

Best aspect

  • Guest teachers
  • The personal attention; quality of teaching, nurturing environment
  • Small group of dancers. Attention is individualized.
  • Working with international teachers from France

Least liked about program

  • Less connection/ communication with individual dancers. More feedback to younger dancers needed. Very little personal physical check in or check out of actual program.
  • The dearth of boys.
  • Not many boys
  • Ate in the satellite cafeteria this year. While it was closer to the residential house, the food was not as good as in the main cafeteria.

Suggested changes to program

  • It would be great if there were more boys participating but this a problem in general with American ballet culture. It's very hard for these smaller but high quality intensives to compete with the larger programs for boys.
  • More boys although the Director brings in professionals to help supplement partnering. Would like to see conditioning classes added to the schedule.

Culture of program

  • Professional. Personalized. Nurturing. A boutique Vaganova training experience.
  • Nuturing, inclusive environment for serious dance students
  • The training environment is very positive. Smaller size allows for more individualized attention.

Other comments

  • Smith college and the program are a great early intensive. Provides controlled freedom with professional level challenge. My dancer experienced really having to work more than her usual home studio for recognition and also learned what it was like when that didn’t work. A very important lesson. Northampton is a great place to be in-safe, creative, open and the campus is gorgeous.
  • If you are looking for solid Vaganova summer training for your dancer in a nurturing, safe environment with excellent facilities, this is the obvious choice.
  • Excellent Vaganova based program that is great for filling in the gaps in my dancer’s year-round program. Teachers are exceptional.
  • High quality instruction by instructors who are passionate about teaching. Had Bournonville technique classes which is unique for many intensives. The contemporary ballet piece en pointe choreographed by one of the French instructors and presented at the demonstration was impressive.
