Best aspect
"Company Faculty"
"it’s an incredible environment and very fun!"
"Techniques, education"
"Getting to work directly with Hubbard St faculty and even the artistic director"
"The creative and welcoming atmosphere."
"Working with company dancers and learning rep the company is currently performing."
"Once students are accepted, they are randomly placed in a technique and a rep class. No stress of placement."
Least liked about program
"Not a lot of foundational classes for rep. I took more Spanish and Roosevelt classes than jazz. Dorming was pretty strict. Can only go out with a minimum of 3 people, and public transportation is prohibited. Additionally, you can only go 3 miles away from the dorm."
"Some of the RA’s were a bit intense"
"Lack of communication"
"My daughter didn't love the meal plan and thought the food wasn't great."
"The food was not in the dorms"
"Large classes and rotating cast of teachers limited building relationships and personal attention.
Too much time was spent at the end of the intensive prepping for the showing. Only one class per day for the last three days, with two days of “mostly sitting around.”"
"The rep was not owned by the company so we couldn’t get a video or take pictures."
Suggested changes to program
"Allowing the use of public transportation without an RA. More foundational technique styles like hip hop, jazz, modern, etc."
"little more freedoms to take public transit and explore more than 3 miles"
"Maybe a check-in to parents from the school during the intensive or a progress report. And I wish there were levels. All students admitted are together, but divided into two random groups."
"Allow parents to help with move out (but that was a dorm issue, not a program issue)"
"Fewer electives and more focused modern technique classes (Horton) with a consistent teacher"
Culture of program
"Lots of gossiping, and everyone was kinda mean. It's catered towards convention kids and their personalities."
"Very supportive and fun"
"Supportive"
"Fun and Inspiring"
"Really welcoming"
"This intensive skews heavily toward traditional competition and convention dancers. Ballet fundamentals are not a focus for most dancers. Teachers are warm and friendly, but don’t have time to get to know students."
"Really warm and accepting"
Other comments
"The food is VERY greasy, but there's a salad bar. Also, they usually force everyone to go to the dining hall to purchase the 5-meal ticket plan; breakfast and dinner are iffy. also you walk EVERYWHERE, so bring good shoes. I think the adult intensive is the most worth it."
"It was one of my dancers favorite intensives she’s ever done. She has done Chautauqua, Ellison, Harid, The Rock and thus ranked very high!"
"Highly recommend!"
"If your dream is to dance in a contemporary company, you need to experience Hubbard St.!"
"It’s hard to answer the placement questions because the students are randomly divided into groups. There’s no real placement. The students have more than one group, which allows them to dance with as many other students in the program as possible."
"Dancer: “You have to be really self motivated to grow here. If you need external validation and personal attention to focus on improving in class, this isn’t the program for you.”"
