Best aspect

  • "My dancer liked the small groups with 1 on 1 corrections. She liked learning the Royal Ballet curriculum outside of her home studio. She enjoyed helping to choreograph a small-group creative dance ensemble, blending the emotional aspect of the dance into a movement scene. She also enjoyed the stagecraft lesson, where the dancers built a small prop and talked about prop interaction onstage."
  • "The teachers were very helpful and walked around to give individual corrections. It was a wonderful experience, having the Royal Ballet staff teaching at this intensive. Iain MacKay also taught class."
  • "Small groups, 1 on 1 attention"
  • "Access to Royal curriculum in the US setting and access to Royal year-round teachers, including technique taught by Iain McKay the entire first week. My dancer indicated this was a very challenging intensive, she particularly appreciated the rep and solos, the ability to really move in the studios and get direct feedback from Royal teachers. The young women in Red Group (ages 16-19) were all very serious and inclusive - my dancer indicated that she met some wonderful friends at this intensive that she intends to keep connected with for the long term. I also personally found it fascinating how they were able to use photographs for auditions purposes to assemble a group of serious, capable young women dancers that were all able to perform together as a ‘core’ group (in less than two weeks) with everyone working at the top of their potential in the end-of-intensive rep (excerpts from La Sylphide)."

Least liked about program

  • "The program was fine. It was difficult to find suitable lodging at this location. Daily parking didn't have in/out privilege which racked up fees quickly for car travelers."
  • "The communication to parents was a bit difficult. Email responses were delayed and the handbook wasn't very detailed."
  • "The west coast was a long travel and housing is expensive in LA"
  • "While lovely and exciting to be at the Music Center, the venue’s studios didn’t have the most optimal facilities for ballet dancing. The floors and the mirror configurations could be improved. My dancer indicated that two young women left early due to injury - unclear whether it was pre-existing or sustained during the intensive). My dancer would have loved for the intensive to be longer and with housing."

Suggested changes to program

  • "A location in Los Angeles that is more oriented to family friendly needs."
  • "Smaller classes and better communication leading up to the intensive."
  • "Possibly a more cost effective area"
  • "Duration and housing offered (hotel lodging for out-of-towners was very expensive)"

Culture of program

  • "Efficiently ran with caring levels of expectations. The confidence of my 10-year-old increased coming out of this summer intensive. She brought back an increased level of artistic expression with her ballet technique. She worked on refining small details of her existing ballet technique that all add up to a more refined ballet dancer on stage."
  • "The entire staff was very encouraging and patient with the dancers."
  • "Very supportive"
  • "Inclusive, high-achieving, kind but demanding with high expectations of the dancers."

Other comments

  • "We hope Royal Ballet comes to Los Angeles again next year. My daughter enjoyed her time learning from the Royal Ballet staff at this summer intensive."
  • "We hope the Royal ballet comes back to Los Angeles again. This was a wonderful experience without the travel to White Lodge."
  • "My daughter loved this intensive. She has done many over the years (large, small and three letter schools) and said this was the most challenging and rigorous she’s experienced. She felt very supported and made many connections. She would definitely do this intensive again if given the opportunity."
