Housing comment

  • For the men it was across Broad Street so her convenient. For the girls it was a 45min bus ride away. I believe they are changing that this year.
  • New housing this year which will be walkable to studios.
  • Male Dancers were housed directly across the road from the dance studios.
  • Marine Club Housing
  • Stayed at Marine Club Dorms
  • My child had an incredible time but the housing located further away possibly had some issues from what I heard.
  • Dancer stayed in Marine Club, so had a fair amount of freedom around Philly. They could explore in groups of 2-3 at 15 yrs old.
  • It was about a mile walk from Curtis Dorm to The Rock; Marine Club is across the Street.
  • Good security younger dancers could only go out with a group and RA.
  • Curtis dorm was a 30 minute walk to class. Marine Club is across the street. They walked in big groups which was safe but there was no backup plan in case of really bad weather.
  • Lovely spacious dorms with huge common areas.
  • Building smelled like maurijuana
  • Dorms had multiple suite mates but 1-2 roommates. Dorms were a 20 minute walk to the studio which could be rough on hot and muggy afternoons.
  • Very safe
  • Marine Club is really run down and needs updating, painting, new carpet, etc.
  • Bathrooms were gross- needed cleaned top to bottom upon move in, including replacing shower curtain!
  • Make sure to get checked out when leaving. My son left before others, there was a mess that they charged the room $200 to clean.
  • Dorms were spacious and suite layout was great.
  • it is very different if you are in cabrini vs the other one, cabrini was very restrictive and didn't let people go outside but as long as you were inside it was very chill, at the marine club people could explore the city.
  • 24/7 front desk security
  • Dorms were very nice and in a great part of the city. It’s about a 25 minute walk to and from the studios from the Curtis dorms. The RAs were really great and helpful.
  • The dorms are basic college dorms; nice city views; furniture in good shape; rooms a good size. There were 8 girls (9 including the RA) in my daughter's suite, and 2 bathrooms. (Some suites had only 6 girls.) The provided vacuums didn't work, so that made cleaning the rooms difficult, as all the floors had to share the one working vacuum. They managed. It would have been helpful to have more washers and dryers, too, and there was an issue with theft in the laundry room, sadly.
  • Suite with 8-10 people
  • She did the last two weeks, which were at Rock West, so she dormed at Church Farm School
  • I only had 1 roommate but I had 7 suite mates
  • I was in Curtis, which is said to be better than Marine Club.
  • The rooms in Marine Club were a good size
  • Dancer stayed in the dorms in West Chester. The dorms were nice, but the food was not good at all. They took a bus every day to the studio.
  • Housing was good- dancer met people by week 3.
  • Laundry was free but very crowded. Only 3 machines for 60 dancers.
  • Housing at west Chester university. The only downside was that buses were not air conditioned and the dorm was behind a street facing dorm which made DoorDash difficult.
  • The dining hall closed early so often when the kids came back they’d have to DoorDash
  • 2 different dorms- the marine club for the boys and a few girls and curtis for the girls. I stayed in the marine club! it’s an apartment complex right across the street from the rock. you walk to the rock for meals, and the meals are prepared by chefs hired by the rock. the food was very hit or miss and usually not enough was supplied.

Absolutely

Best aspect

  • Guest teachers were amazing
  • Quality of instructors
  • Peter Stark! A very large number of male dancers so great for boys.
  • Training was wonderful
  • Amazing guest teachers and faculty. The balance of challenging classes and fun activities was perfect.
  • The personal attention each teacher gave the students and the smaller class size.
  • It was a fair reflection of what the year round program is. The technical focus was amazing and all faculty was easily approachable.
  • Great teachers
  • The ballet focus and number of hours of dance per day (approx. 4.5)
  • Really enjoyed many styles of training to expand your training.
  • The Varied Teachers were all excellent. They were challenging without being mean.
  • Great guest teachers although my dancer didn’t get all. Students from all over.
  • The teachers were amazing. The training and exposure to so many different teachers was exceptional
  • Great feedback from teachers
  • Fantastic teachers, decorated guest faculty, amazing outings and communication.
  • This is hard to answer, my child only attended 1 week because she was at a 5 week program before this one. I knew some info about the show because of knowing other families who attended. My daughter really enjoyed every class, and felt happy to be back in a studio. She loved her pointe classes and contemporary.
  • Great trustworthy environment and safe. Great instruction wonderful teachers, Peter stark is incredible
  • Learning new styles, performance, partnering, teaching was top notch
  • Peter Stark leadership
  • Very solid training, parents were informed and my daughter grew leaps and bounds this summer. I also appreciated that The Rock Staff kept the safety of the students at the top of their priorities. Solid program that is very well run.
  • The guest teachers were absolutely wonderful! The intensive students were also very nice and supportive. My daughter loved this SI and gained a lot of confidence not only as a dancer but also as a person.
  • Teachers and attention given to students
  • Actual classes and teachers were amazing
  • Men’s classes
  • The classes were great
  • The amount of classes offered and the dorm living
  • Learning from so many different teachers and having full classes with comparable students.
  • Great training and fun experience being in the city.
  • The quality of all the teachers, every class was very good
  • Partnering, which she hasn't had at our home studio. She learned a lot and the boys were older and stronger. She also enjoyed learning different styles of ballet from the various guest teachers, like Balanchine and Vaganova. She really liked the variations class, too.
  • The tough teachers
  • She loved learning from new instructors.
  • Classes with experienced Teachers; Church Farm school smaller location-easy to form close relationships with other students
  • The variety of teachers was nice. The schedule was also well balanced and you would be tired by the end of the day but not burnt out.
  • The growth was wonderful, the atmosphere was very nurturing, and the airbnb we stayed in across the street was extremely convenient. Everyone was very nice and my daughter got wonderful attention.
  • Classes taught by Peter Stark - Meeting other girls who are laser focused on improving during class and understand your passion. - Making friends from all over the world.
  • How much attention the teachers gave everyone despite how large the classes were
  • All of the dancers at Marine Club really bonded and it was just across the street from the studios. My favorite classes were definitely partnering with Mr. Stark and technique with Ms. Suarez. Both are amazing teachers. Mr. Allen, Mr. Moreira and Ms. Zeiger were amazing as well! They teach year round.
  • Several technique classes and full show at the end
  • Dancing with such talents dancers and the instructors!
  • This is a wonderful program for boys to attend! Must have on the bucket list!
  • My dd found the intensive excellent. Rhis was her second year attending The Rock Philly. She was cast in a specail small group and front center for much of her group dance. She learned so much and felt that the corrections from her teachers were consistent and she welcomed them. The school in Philly is well contained and this leads to a lovely learning environment.
  • Attention to every aspect of your ballet technique.
  • The passion and professionalism shown by Mr. Stark and Mr. Diaz.
  • Challenging yet supportive
  • the men’s training and the amount of partnering we had

Least liked about program

  • A few favourites were focused on, the rest pretty much ignored.
  • How far the dorms were from the studio.
  • Very few combined classes, almost no partnering, too much downtime.
  • Pressure to join year round that students received.
  • The 45min/hour+ bus ride from dorms to studios was tiring. Although it seems beginning this summer, 2023, all resident dancers will be in Philadelphia within 2 miles of The Rock studios.
  • My roommates, however that is something that could not be helped.
  • Not sure
  • They charged for everything
  • Nothing
  • The Walk and having to take the stairs while within The Rock
  • Walk to classes from larger dorm was about 25 min/little over a mile. Registration info said 10 min walk.
  • No movement amongst levels, not enough pointe vs other intensives. The food was "meh".. water bubbles were warm.
  • 1 mile walk back to the dorm
  • Food and long walk from housing to studio each day.
  • It was rough going to the last week of a 6 weeks program, they should’ve been offered the Saturday class. Other than that I think it was a great SI and am happy my daughter had this between her 5 week and returning to her studio which is starting later this year.
  • It seemed there were some favorites and they got to do everything. Like one kid had a solo and they all didn't get to audition. And like a random trio but of course noone auditioned and they would make this under the radar. Seemed mostly to be international students who recieved parts.
  • The walk to the studio from the dorms, sometimes the food was not appetizing
  • Lack of sleep due to noisy roommates
  • The venue for the showcase was in another state and about 40 minutes away from the studio (with traffic the drive was even longer). This was a hardship for some parents flying in to pick up their children because they had to take expensive Uber rides or rent vehicles to get to and from the event. It would have been nice if the school provided bus transportation for the parents or had the showcase in Philadelphia closer to the school. Also, the showcase for my daughter’s level only featured five dancers while the rest of the dancers (about 16) hardly danced and simply did a few steps and waved their arms in the background. This was incredibly disappointing considering that most of the dancers had trained for five weeks at the school and weren’t able to showcase for their families what they had learned or how they had improved. It is also a shame because my daughter was in one of the top two levels with many talented dancers in her class. I should say, however, that choreographers that choreographed dances for other levels did a better job working to showcase all dancers in their pieces. This equity was much appreciated by the parents with students in those levels. Finally, the school did have a party after the showcase, but it was expensive ($75 per person) considering it only provided limited finger foods at the studio. I miss the party supper cruises they did in previous years. Bring those back. :)
  • Studio was a one mile walk from dorm.
  • The Residence Life staff needs to get their act together- the leadership was very rude and condescending when presented with problems. The walk to and from the dorms was a bit excessive and I didn't think the transportation from outtings was well organized.
  • I liked everything
  • The walk to classes.
  • This is for Cabrini the other dorms were very different: 1. the food at cabrini was unhealthy and disgusting and there were very few options. 2. at cabrini we were not allowed to go outside at all, not even with a chaperone.
  • the area
  • Too many Pilates classes; 7 of 11 days. Not enough pointe classes; 4 the first week and none the second week. Daughter felt some of the dancers always rushed to the front of the class and everyone else was ignored. She only received 3 corrections in 2 weeks and hoped for more.
  • The food.
  • Too many mixed level classes and the food at Curtis
  • Her words: The waiting around, as there were 2-hour lunch breaks and some breaks between classes. The walks to The Rock from dorms at Curtis (and back), as the weather was extremely hot, the walk was long, and there were some frightening incidents with homeless people. (The kids were in a large group with chaperones and everyone is okay, but my daughter was really rattled.) The only other issue was meals, but the staff were very communicative and fixed the issues. (Girls in the upper levels had class until 6 or 7, depending on the night. The walk back to the dorm was 20 minutes, but they all had to go together, in one group. By the time they got back—sometimes as late as 7:45—very little food was left and it was cold, as dinner service was 5:30-8. It was changed to 6-8:30 and more food was brought out for the older girls when they arrived home, and my daughter said it was a much better experience then.)
  • Favoritism towards year round students
  • Lower levels didn’t get to do partnering
  • Rock Westchester was seen as “less” status than Rock Philly.
  • The class sizes were very big.
  • She would have loved more actual partnering classes instead of ballroom. She would have loved a couple more classes during the day and no hip hop. She believes that the contemporary classes could have been better as well with west guest teachers.
  • The 20-25 min walk through Philadelphia. (even as a commuter, some classes were held at the dorm - dropped dancer off and then she walked with dorm kids to the main building. It was least favorite part but also the favorite part bc she got a taste of dorm life and loved the walk with her class friends that she didn't get to spend time with outside of class.)
  • Walking 30 minutes to the studio at noon in 105degree weather
  • There are a lot of breaks during the day. Sometimes I would have 3 hour breaks in between classes and we weren’t allowed to leave the studios. There were also no open studios to practice or take pictures in so we would sit in the hallways together. The food for Marine Club was definitely the worst aspect. A lot of people doordashed every night or went to chipotle across the street. There would only be one option every meal and if you didn’t like it then that was it. And lastly the bus company for the summer was not safe. We got into a wreck on the highway and they had to tow our bus and another car. We had to sit there in the heat for over an hour until the police stopped traffic and got us safely onto another bus.
  • Large breaks in between classes. Sometimes up to 4 hours and the students aren’t allowed to leave and come back.
  • The food
  • Lots of down time!
  • She would trade in the mat pilates for a more intense stretch or pbt class, or reformer options. She would also love partnering over ballroom anyday.
  • Partnering for only the upper levels, variations en flat for lowers levels and very little pointe work for lower levels
  • The exclusions sold out very quickly. However, my dancer made it to each one even on the waitlist.
  • the long breaks and the food

Suggested changes to program

  • Equitable: Teachers should focus on developing all the dancers. They seemed to be focused more on the international students. A more ‘intensive’ Daily Schedule: class time was only around 4 hours a day, he dances similar hours per day at his home studio Social: more activities for the dancers - they were in their dorms for hours every day.
  • Adding additional dance styles
  • More precise levels (instead of only 2 levels for men), more partnering, more dance.
  • Any year round offers would be given once the student was home. Make it affordable and made the educational piece optional. We have a free virtual education within our state that we could have used instead of their $15-$20K educational piece.
  • Nothing! It was a fantastic experience!
  • I wish there were character classes included.
  • Long walk from dorm to studios
  • Truly not sure.
  • Chaperones not allowed to take classes
  • The dress code.
  • nothing.
  • Would be good to have clear idea of what levels were. Sometimes they were combined. Might have been years on pointe as part of basis but wasn’t told. Buses to class esp when bad weather. My dancer never got director as teacher would have liked.
  • Provide dancers written feedback, provide ballet coaching 1:1 and better food.
  • Better nutrition! If
  • Saturday class for last group and a class observation.
  • The opportunities to be offered more evenly for all the students participating. I think this would help with the clicky atmosphere. I understand everywhere is competive but if you attend be prepared to be extremely competitive.
  • Closer dorms
  • See previous answer. Also, there were a few year round students that received more attention than the SI students in a few of the classes taught by year round teachers.
  • Distance from dorm to studio
  • transportation. - felt like their should have been bussing offered daily if they wanted it. 30 minute walk is alot. Felt like they should not have school busses everywhere.
  • They should have shuttle buses to take the dancers to and from the studios.
  • let the cabrini kids go outside
  • better location
  • A better balance of classes. Equal attention to all the dancers no matter where they are positioned in the studio.
  • More pointe work. The walk to and from the dorms to the studio felt long especially on very hot days but you get used to it over time.
  • More class on Saturday - variations class would be nice
  • She says: fewer long breaks, so all kids could be out of class by 4:30 or so, which would let them have more time to shower, eat, hang out, or go out with a chaperone. Curfew was 8:30 PM and my daughter's level headed to the Rock at 9:45 AM for a 10:30 class, then stayed at The Rock all day (four classes) until they headed back after evening class, so they had time for dinner and that was about it. (Girls with early classes were back at the dorm by 3:30 and could go out sightseeing or shopping in the afternoons if there were RAs or chaperones available.) That being said, she liked the girls in her classes and her suite and really enjoyed hanging out with them.

  • N/a
  • More interaction with Peter Stark
  • Not accepting as many people because the class sizes were very big.
  • More classes are always great and more partnering.
  • I would move the dorms closer. It’s a lot of walking especially if your first class is on the 6th floor
  • I would have changed my level placement, as only those in the very high levels could do partnering and work with Peter Stark.
  • Different meal plan with more options and fruit or salad bar available at every meal, not just at occasional lunches.
  • The scheduling of classes with less breaks. More variety of extra classes like pbt, contemporary, and partnering.
  • Would have preferred closer outings because much of the day was spent on the bus ride there.
  • I would not change their program they are very successful and wonderful teachers
  • More character classes, they were a great adition. More stretch classes and more PBT.
  • Partnering class for all levels, performing en pointe for all levels (everyone has prior pointe experience on stage)
  • My daughters roommate.
  • get rid of the long breaks and add modern

Culture of program

  • Peter Stark had just arrived at the Rock so it is hard to describe the culture.
  • Very positive and supportive
  • There was a large range of abilities, so some dancers were serious and competitive but there was also a lot of dancers who were not.
  • Very positive. Very much like they are the best/only place to train.
  • The culture was very positive and supportive. Dancers were extremely supportive and friendly. All instructors were encouraging.
  • Very friendly and healthy for both younger and older students.
  • Well run, supportive, organized
  • Friendly competition, very supportive, positive.
  • Nurturing
  • This was my daughter’s first intensive away from home studio so I don’t have anything to compare it to but it seemed good. No issues in dorm etc
  • Fun.between dorms and classes she had a blast
  • Supportive
  • Nurturing, inclusive
  • Seemed nice.
  • Competitive, professional, high end
  • Inclusive, not toxic, some favoritism but nothing over the top
  • Fun but serious about technique development and growth. Challenging with motivation
  • Respectful, professional and strict
  • Welcoming and friendly
  • Good friendly culture from teachers and staff
  • Huge intensive- Res life a bit out of touch...
  • Good!
  • intense
  • Positive and supportive.
  • Positive
  • Focused and friendly
  • Encouraging! She found everyone to be kind and respectful.
  • Tough but positive
  • Seemed supportive, all of the dancers my daughter met were kind.
  • Positive
  • The culture was really good and mostly positive.
  • The culture of the school was wonderful, with very thoughtful staff and teachers.
  • positive, encouraging, non competitive
  • I made some really amazing friends!
  • The dancers at Marine Club were all super nice. We had lots of downtime (sometimes done with classes by 3pm) so we spent a lot of time together at the dorms. We didn’t get to spend much time with the Curtis kids outside of class since they were so far away.
  • Positive environment with the right amount of discipline.
  • Friendly and inspiring
  • Lots of great ballet classes. Dorms were nice. Took a long while to get to know people.
  • Very positive. placement was very well suited for students level of ballet knowledge. Supportive teachers and staff that recognize the students with desire to train hard.
  • Nurturing to individuals needs
  • The faculty set great expectations. The parents even got together to help the girl dynamics. At the end of the day, mean girls are mean girls.
  • Incredibly supportive
  • fun, supportive, and hard-working

Other comments

  • My son had a good time but didn’t grow much as a dancer.
  • Mix of ballet styles-There was no option for Classical ballet on this survey.
  • Peter Stark is absolutely amazing! He was so generous with his time and advice and was incredibly supportive. The Rock is a great first away SI for male dancers.
  • My daughter loved every aspect of the program.
  • Great first intensive
  • It was a great choice for my son. It is the longest he has been away and I truly felt he grew inside and out of the classroom.
  • They charged for EVERYTHING! There was a $28/person fee to attend the end of season show. The tee shirt required for field trips was an additional $10. The end of season show is not even in the same state!
  • The Rock strives to teach many different styles of ballet to give dancers the variety they need for a career in dance. Dancer loved everything about this program, and thought it was challenging, fun, was surrounded by very talented peers.
  • Top Notch that we highly recommend
  • I wish they did some Philadelphia activities. They really didn't experience Philly except in their neighborhood. 14 and under needed an RA to leave with them, which was difficult to find.
  • Definitely would attend again.
  • Peter starks commitment to the boys at the rock is unmatched. Connor has recieved close mentoring from him even if he wasn't the "favorite" in casting. All the classes were separated from girls except for partnering and contemporary and rehearsals. They were fitted into actual costumes for the performance that was an hour long at a theatre. He had jumps and turns everyday and all male technique classes.
  • Overall, will go back. Ballet curiculum was second to none, and that's the bottom line.
  • Peter Stark is non competitive and really cares about all the boys. He is a straight forward guy that has the boys best interest in mind.
  • great mens program
  • Not necessarily a bad thing, but the Fourth of July was in the middle of the second week. As a result, there was only one class that day so everyone could go on a field trip. The following day there were only 3 classes. The cafeteria was not available to those rooming at Curtis (they had to pack a bagged lunch each day) or commuters. It was something she was looking forward to as we’ve heard raved reviews about the cafe food.
  • Overall a great intensive and would return again. Feel that technique improved.
  • This was her first summer away. Five weeks is a long time, but she enjoyed every minute of it. The days were long and the food situation was an issue at first, but she would go back in a heartbeat as she feels she learned so much. Her classes (Level 5) were daily technique, pointe, variations, partnering, repertory, Pilates, and contemporary. She liked that the intensive was ballet focused and they didn't have to take a lot of other styles of dance.
  • Rock Westchester having housing for SI was new this summer. Very positive experience.
  • For partnering the highest levels would do it but the lower ones usually only got to do it once. I would really recommend this intensives because the teachers, facilities, training, and overall experience is amazing.
  • Definitely. Was a wonderful first summer intensive for my daughter, and I was fortunate enough to work there for the five weeks as well.
  • Loved this for my 1st intensive! Would happily go back!
  • I didn't improve much from the teachers.
  • Definitely need to enforce rules at the excursions. It was pretty disorganized and there were bad incidents. We didn’t check in with our RAs, they just did a headcount at the end of the day and that was it. But overall it was a really fun experience and I made a lot of good friends.
  • Excellent training.
  • This was my daughter’s first 5 week intensive and while there were some bumps along the way they were handled wonderfully by the staff and she had a fantastic experience. She loved her instructors and the friends she made and was very sad to leave. I would highly recommend The Rock to anyone.
  • I would definitely have my dd attend full-time if it aligned with our family dynamics at this time. We will see what the future brings!
  • The post performance gala was amazing!
  • Mr. Stark and staff are extremely inspiring. I really liked the talk track around placement levels that I could reinforce with my dancer.
  • each teacher has their own style, which is good so that you can learn different styles of ballet! the teachers push you a lot, but that’s what helped me grow a lot. i learned so much, and my technique and partnering skills improved immensely! i would recommend this program to anyone who wants to go to the year round program and boys!
